“The Chrysler 300 is a Sexy Mother#@*! Or,
Firewall, a Review” by Rory Coleman
"Binary
Code. Virtual Money. All ones and zeros," is an unattributed
quote prominently displayed on a page in the printed handout
given out at the screening. See the movie to find out who
says it. I think it's
Han Solo, but you get the point: Harrison Ford is the nerd
using a Linux Terminal to protect the money.
As he parks his car and
unlocks the door to his upscale suburban home, Jack Stanfield
(Ford) would never suspect that here, too, his every move
is being surreptitiously observed. Much of this blissful uncertainty
is surely due to the aforementioned car. “Elegance comes standard
on the 2006 Chrysler 300. An aerodynamic exterior delivers
refined wind-noise management, enhancing fuel efficiency and
creating
a quiet interior.” Here, Jack can be content to dream of electric
sheep on his way home from protecting his bank from hackers
Starting from a position
of relative comfort and control, Jack's main concern is a
nagging personality conflict with a competitive colleague
specifically, the T1000 from “Terminator 2,” in this film,
taking the form of Robert Patrick. That's all well and good,
until Jack's security partner (he brains, him brawn) Robert
Forster introduces Jack to our charming, tea-and-biscuit-slurping,
dastardly dandy, a nimbly evil Englishman played by Jennifer
Connelly's husband.
The director of the film,
Richard Loncraine, who directed
Sir Ian McKellen in the glorious and fearful “Richard III”
says of
Jennifer Connelly's husband, "Paul has the ability to
turn from chalk to cheese in an instant." Without having
the foggiest what-in-the-hell that means, it is certain that
this feat of alchemy must be impressive enough for Jennifer
Connelly (though not as impressive as being referred to as
"Jennifer Connelly's Husband"). Now, Paul Bettany
(Jennifer Connelly’s Husband) and his "tight team of
mercenary accomplices" storm the home of Indiana Jones
(who is now a hacker and settled quietly in the Pacific Northwest)
and tie up his wife, Virginia Madsen, who has left Antonio
Sabato Jr. to raise two children and be an architect.
Soon Jack Ryan, err, Stanfield,
“will be forced into unfamiliar violence situation as he tries
to save the lives of the people he loves, pushing past whatever
standards of behavior he once held. The changes in Jack are
so dramatic that a hurried glance into a mirror days later
reveals to him a man he has difficulty recognizing.”
Other points about "Firewall"
The MOVIE worth noting:
-- Mary Lynn Rajskub of
“Mr. Show,” and apparently, “24” as well, way too frickin
cute no matter what they try to do to hide it.
-- Not enough Robert Forster,
Jennifer Connelly, Sean Connery,
Too-Short, Chewie or James Earl Jones as the ailing mentor.
-- “Luxury comes standard
on the 2006 Chrysler 300. With 105.8 cubic feet of passenger
room, it's more than just spacious.” That's why there are
several scenes set inside the automobile with its “rich, Corinthian
leather.” The car appears in 36 (+,-) shots. This does not
count the scenes that take place inside the car, and are comprised
of several shots, sometimes including the opulent, “California
Walnut of the steering wheel.”

Just imagine how impressed and delighted your friends will
be 10 years from now, when you can say "Yeah... I saw
"Firewall” The MOVIE when it was in the movie the-ate-r!"
