What we're talking about here is an awful movie. A big bomb (as opposed to being "THE BOMB"). It's a stinker, a turkey. To make matters worse, this reviewer had to view this mess in IMAX, sitting 4 rows away from a hundred foot screen (talk about headache provoking!)

300 is based on the ancient story of the battle of Thermopylae where 300 Spartan soldiers held off Xerses and his massive Persian army until an isolationist Greece decided to get involved. The movie starts out promisingly enough until one becomes aware of the entire cast's amateurish over-the-top acting and the elephantine script. This shouldn't take anyone longer than three minutes - - - and then the grinding boredom sets in.

The overblown battle scenes are kept widely spaced between long, dark, brooding periods of introspection and hand-wringing.

I am truly a fan of Frank Miller's earlier film "Sin City", which broke all kinds of new ground graphically and cinematically. It just goes to show that art is a tenuous thing that is not easily re-manufactured, especially in Hollywood. But all is not lost. "300" might very well make an acceptable video game.
